Grace, Strength, and Resilience: What to Expect in Your First Pole Class
My first class was back in 2021 when I started practising Pole Fitness. At the time, I didn't know the differences between the various styles of pole dance. I turned up in running shorts and a sports bra.I kept going back because I absolutely loved the challenge, even though I hadn't done any exercise for a long time.
For those looking to begin their own journey, here are a few gentle reminders for your first session:
- π« Avoid lotions, oils, or shaving cream right before your class, as they make the pole slippery.
- π Expect some discomfort the day after training; your skin will need time to adapt, and you will likely get a few bruises.
- π Wear fitted shorts for your first class. It does not matter too much what kind, as long as they stay in place. High-waisted yoga shorts that can be rolled down are ideal if a particular move requires skin contact.
- πBring a small hand towel and rubbing alcohol after a few classes so you can clean your own pole during the session.
- ✊Consider grip aids like grip for cold weather, or chalk if your hands sweat a lot.
- π€’ Avoid Heavy Meals. Going upside down or spinning with a full stomach frequently causes nausea, acid reflux, and cramping. Keep it light!. Consume a small, easily digestible snack 1 to 2 hours before your class.
- π Ditch the jewellery. Take off all rings, bracelets, and necklaces before class. Metal-on-metal scratches the poles, damages your jewelry, and ruins your grip.
- π§ Bring Water. Hydration is everything. Bring a water bottle to class.
Most importantly, listen to your instructor carefully. They are there to guide you safely
Happy training!
